General FAQs
Q 1. What is FTP?
A. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a standard Internet protocol like HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), which transfers displayable web pages. FTP is the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet and is most commonly used to update and maintain websites.

Q 2. Why do I need an FTP client?

A. FTP clients are used to transfer files to and from your local computer and a remote FTP server. The most common use of FTP is to upload, download and maintain websites. FTP is also commonly used to transfer and back up large files to a server. It is faster and more efficient to transfer your files via FTP than other methods, especially when using Tango FTP.

Q 3. What is .NET and why do I need it for Tango FTP?

A. The .NET Framework is Microsoft's new, revolutionary software programming architecture designed to create the latest computer applications. In order for you to run next generation applications like Tango FTP that utilize this new technology, you need to make sure your operating system is updated with the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 which is available as a free download from Microsoft. Q 4. How do I login to a server?

A. To login to a server, you need three pieces of information

1. an FTP address (like ftp.myserver.com)
2. a username
3. a password

If you have a website registered you should have been provided with this information when you registered for your hosting account. When you first launch Tango FTP you will see the Tango FTP Simple Login screen. To login, enter your FTP address, username and password and click "Connect". For more information, click here

Q 5. How do I save login settings?
A. Your login settings can be stored at anytime by clicking the red "Add Account" heart on the tool bar to open the "Account Setup" dialog box. Enter your information including a unique "Account Nickname" so you can identify this account in the Favorites menu. Click OK and this login information will be saved. Q 6. How do I edit my favorites?
A. To edit your favorites, use the mouse to right click on the favorite you wish to edit in the favorites panel. After right clicking on the favorite, you will then be able to edit or delete.

Q 7. What is the Master Password?

A. With Tango FTP, you have the option to assign a Master Password that is separate from all individual account passwords. One Master Password, when applied, will lock all important accounts as an extra layer of security.

Caution: Accounts that require the Master Password cannot be accessed without it, so write it down and keep it in a safe place. If you forget your Master Password you will have to reset it.

Q 8. How do I disconnect from a server?

A. To disconnect from a server and return to the login view, simply click on the blue "Eject" button in the middle of the screen. If you are in the middle of an operation, the blue Eject button changes to a red "Stop" button. You have to click the red Stop button first, then you will be able to click the Eject button and disconnect from the server.

Q 9. How do I upload and download files?

A. To upload items from your computer to a server, select the items you want to upload in the local "My PC" window on the left. The upload button in the middle of the screen will then turn green and point up. Click the green upload button and the transfer will start immediately - or simply Drag 'n' Drop the items from one window to the other..

To download items from a server to your computer, select the items you want to download from the remote "Server" window on the right. The download button in the middle of the screen will then turn orange and point down. Click the orange download button and the transfer will start immediately - or simply Drag 'n' Drop the items from one window to the other. For more information, click here

Q 10. How do I stop an operation once it has started?

A. Once a transfer begins, or when you are deleting items, the blue "Eject" button changes to a red "Stop" button. Click the stop button to abort the operation.

Q 11. How do I create a new local or remote folder?

A. To create a new folder in either the local or remote view, click the “My PC" icon or the "Server" icon. You can click anywhere in either window to make that window active. You can tell which side is active by a highlighted gold border around the edge. Click the yellow "New Folder" button on the tool bar and you will see the New Folder dialog box. Name the new folder and click OK.

Q 12. How do I delete files and folders?

A. To delete files and/or folders, select the items you want to delete and click the red "X" icon on the tool bar. The "Delete Confirmation" dialog box will confirm that you wish to delete the selection. Click OK and you're done. Caution! Once you delete items using Tango FTP, they are gone forever, so be careful.
